Spomenik Post Nr.2

The Tjentište Spomenik was on the top of my must-see list. It's strict symmetrical design, attention to detail and enormous size certainly caught my interest. The similarity to a pair of wings is uncanny and if you look closer it even seems like they consist of two opposing forces before imminent battle. Visible in the second and third picture.
.
Like all monuments from that period, it commemorates fallen partizan soldiers who defended the country from a german invasion during WWII.
.
What also fascinated me was the echo. The monument was designed to resonate with the visitors voices, it amplifies it and adds a kind of slap-back echo to it.
.

Since childhood I visited my family in Bosnia and Hercegovina every summer and I always wondered why there was such a huge monument located on the nearby hill site, overlooking the whole valley. Usually I only got short and unsatisfying answers, which grew my interest in such forgotten monuments, so called "Spomenik"s from a lost era.
.
Remembering partizan soldiers fighting the germans in WWII, it used to be a well visited place back in Yugoslavia to remember the wounded of the battle of Neretva, especially on the yearly "Day of the Fighter", a former national holiday.
.
In the early 1990s, as the Yugoslav Wars began, the monument fell into despair. I still remember, hearing the news that in November 2000, the monument was dynamited by vandals, leaving only the framework standing.
.
So that's me revisiting the monument site and finally understanding why it stood there and why it now still does, in a way...
.
It's sad to see such impressive works of mostly brutalist architecture being neglected or in the case of Makljen, destroyed. Make love, not war. ✌✌✌
.

The whole process of making these sound carriers was super nerve-wrecking and there was a lot of bad timing involved in this odyssey. Of course, the pandemic didn't help too and in autumn I thought that I'll never get to hold my first 12 inch vinyl. 🥵
